How to Start Working Out at the Gym as a Complete Beginner

How to get started at the gym

Your first visit to the gym does not have to feel intimidating. You do not need to know the name of every machine or lift heavy weights straight away. What you need is a clear, manageable plan.

Start with a realistic goal

Your goal might be to feel stronger, have more energy, improve your fitness or feel more confident. Choose a reason that matters to you and helps you stay focused on why you are starting.

Do not try to do everything in one workout

Two workouts a week are enough for many beginners to build a routine. A well-rounded session can include a warm-up, exercises for your legs and glutes, back, arms and core, followed by a short cool-down.

How do you choose the right weight?

Choose a weight that lets you complete each repetition with control. If you have to swing the weight or arch your back to finish a movement, it is probably too heavy for now.

Make the most of the machines

Machines can be a helpful starting point because they support your body while you learn a movement. Take time to adjust the seat, select a manageable weight and practise steady breathing.

Progress is about more than weight

You may notice progress when you find the stairs easier, have more energy, sleep better or feel more at ease in the gym.
